Containment Systems for the Prevention of Pollution (CIRIA C736F)
CIRA C736 was published in 2014 to provide practical guidance on containment systems around best practices on spill prevention, mitigation, and response following several incidents including the Buncefield Fire.
The Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999
An Act to make provision for implementing Council Directive 96/61/EC and for otherwise preventing and controlling pollution; to make provision about certain expired or expiring disposal or waste management licences; and for connected purposes.
Legislation
The Control of Major Hazards Regulations 1999
Every operator shall take all measures necessary to prevent major accidents and limit their consequences to persons and the environment.
The Environment Permitting Regulations 2010 (EPR)
Provides a risk- based, streamlined framework, drawing together a number of formerly separate consenting regimes. The Regulations set compliance conditions on operators to minimise pollution into the atmosphere, to ground and to water.
Sentencing Guidelines
Maintenance and drainage plan assessments to ensure your system is capable of containing water pollution. These guidelines are to prevent unauthorised or harmful deposit, treatment or disposal etc of waste and illegal discharges to air, land and water.
Section 82 of the Environmental Act 2021
Requires sewerage undertakers to continuously monitor the quality of the receiving water upstream and downstream of their assets. This will allow sewerage undertakers to assess the impact of discharges from their assets on the receiving watercourse.
Dealing with Firewater Runoff, Water UK
Firewater from Waste Storage Sites. Firewater is not classed as trade effluent within the meaning of the Water Industry Act 1991, however the run-off can contain potentially hazardous constituents. Fire Prevention Plans drafted as part of a site emergency procedures or as a regulatory requirement for Waste Sites to comply with the Environment Agency (EA) Guidance under The Environmental Permitting Regulations (England and Wales) as revised.

PPG 3 (2016) - Use & Design of Oil Separators in Surface Water Drainage Systems
Use and design of oil separators in surface water drainage systems. These guidelines will help you decide if you need an oil separator at your site and, if so, what size and type of separator is appropriate.
PPG 7 (2011) - The Safe Operation of Refuelling Facilities
These guidelines have been produced for operators of both retail and non-retail liquid fuel refuelling facilities. They will help you prevent damage to surface waters, groundwater, land and air. They describe good practice in fuel storage and management that can reduce the environmental risk of your site. These guidelines also refer to the storage and handling of other liquids commonly used in association with fuel storage and dispensing.
PPG 13 (2007) - Vehicle Washing and Cleaning
This guidance also applies to washing and cleaning plant, machinery, equipment and boats as the principles are generally the same. Effluent and run-off from vehicle washing and cleaning activities can damage the environment and pollute rivers, streams, burns and groundwater.
